Northeastern Grants & Scholarships - Merit Scholarships |

 |
Scholarship Overview |
|
| |
|
Northeastern offers a limited number of merit scholarships at the time of admission, based upon academic merit. Students in the top 25% of Northeastern’s accepted applicant pool are considered for these scholarships, which are awarded by the Office of Undergraduate Admission on the basis of academic ability, achievement, motivation, and promise.
Most merit scholarships are awarded for a total of eight semesters of study provided the required grade-point average is maintained. Many merit scholarships require the signing of a contract of understanding, which is included with the offer of financial assistance.
Students planning on attending in the Fall 2008 semester who applied well before the January 15, 2008 regular application deadline are considered for all scholarship opportunities.
Students are not required to complete the financial aid applications to be considered for a merit scholarship.
Northeastern offers three full-tuition scholarships: the Carl S. Ell Scholarships, the Ralph J. Bunche Scholarship, and the Reggie Lewis Memorial Scholarship. Only Fall applicants will be considered for these scholarships. In addition, Northeastern offers many partial tuition scholarships.

Scholarship Renewal |
|
| |
|
Merit scholarships are renewed annually as long as the student is attending classes as a full-time student and maintains the cumulative grade point average required for the scholarship.
Grade point averages (GPA) are reviewed at the end of the Spring semester. Students whose cumulative GPA falls below the required standard are allowed one academic semester of probation in the following academic year to regain eligibility. During the probation semester, the student will receive the scholarship.
If the student fails to attain the required GPA after the probationary semester, the scholarship will be cancelled. If the student has financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, a portion of the scholarship may be returned in the form of a Northeastern Grant. The student may regain the scholarship by bringing his/her cumulative GPA above the required standard. Students are only eligible for one probationary period.
All students must have an exit interview with a financial aid counselor if they require a leave of absence from the University. Leaves of absence can be granted for up to one year, but must be approved by the Office of Student Financial Services. If a leave exceeds one year, the merit scholarship will be forfeited. |

Appeal Process |
|
| |
|
Students who lose their scholarship for academic or other reasons can submit an appeal in writing to their financial aid counselor, explaining the special circumstances to be considered. Appeals will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Scholarship Appeals Committee. All decisions are final. |
